About the artist

Mario Côté has produced an impressive number of pieces from 1993 to 2000, initially as an exploration of schematic representations of electronic images before focusing on the renown experimental cinema figure Dziga Vertov. In recent years, his work has been dedicated to the visual translation of sounds from urban locations. His pictorial translations are inspired by musical compositions by the  American composer Morton Feldman and the Russian composer Galina Oustvolkaïa. As a painter, he questions traditional musical notation and its structuring of time, inscribing it instead into a visual space through geometric and non-figurative signs. His work has been shown as a retrospective exhibition in Tableau (2002) at the Musée d'art de Joliette (Québec) with independent commissioner Nicole Gingras, and at the Musée régional de Rimouski, in Table d’écoute (2015), with commissioner Patrice Loubier. Côté has also directed documentaries on dance and the work of visual artists. He is represented by Galerie Trois Points.
