CARTES POSTALES DE CHIMÈRE (re-enactment)
An intimate solo in vast imaginary landscapes…
Cartes postales de Chimère is originally a solo created for and by Louise Bédard in 1996. In February 2015, it returned to stage. The choreographer chose two charismatics dancers to learn the role she created on herself : Isabelle Poirier and Lucie Vigneault.
Cartes postales de Chimère marked Louise Bédard's dancing career as well as the critics, spectators of the time and the dance community. Her Jean A. Chalmers National Dance Award (1997) for her outstanding contribution to dance creativity and performance in Canada is one of the witnesses.
A single figure wanders through time and across different paths to imaginary continents; towards vast and opulent places. Movements emerge, like landmarks along the way. The music of Brahms, then that of Kronos Quartet and Michel F. Côté takes her to worlds in which she transforms herself. Where are we? Who is she and where are we going?
Universality, and the memory that lies within a woman’s body compose the raw material from which the choreographer drew to create this complexe and lyrical solo piece. Presented on both sides, the work is inclusive and promises to take the spectator on an intimate journey, a colorful voyage rocked by the music of Brahms, and other intriguing sounds from faraway countries.
Louise Bédard created a tailor-made role for the woman performer and dancer in her forties, to overcome her physical limits and dare to free herself by opening a breach on the side of abandonment. The material of the work is one of a memory, a memory of the body of women. The work of interpretation is demanding and requires the artist to be both fully invested while being in close relationship with the public.

Cartes de Chimère is the subject of a choreographic toolkit produced by the Jean-Pierre Perreault Foundation. A choreographic toolkit is a true treasure troves of information, containing all the necessary elements to understand and reconstruct the dance work. In 2016, for the 31st Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal Louise Bédard Danse is the dance nominee : ”for the contributions its director has made to the city’s artistic landscape, exemplified by the Série Solos cycle, and for the restaging of Cartes postales de Chimère, a major work featuring two dancers from the new generation.”
In 2015, Lucie Vigneault won the Prix de la danse de Montréal - performer category, especially for her remarkable performance in Cartes postales de Chimère.

Portant une mémoire, elle [l'interprète] devient autre : femmes multiples, langage dédoublé. Dans ses mouvements amples, elle traverse « des chimères » et nous présente des imaginaires dans une gestuelle maîtrisée. Les récits se superposent. Et la métamorphose devient un fil narratif. Qui est-elle, cette femme sous nos yeux? se demande t-on. Qui sont-elles? Elle vient chercher quelque chose de très profond dans celui qui la regarde.

La puissance de ce solo réside beaucoup dans cette composition acharnée du geste, des attaques dans l’espace, du rythme. Le travail inhérent à la chorégraphie est très palpable, et je dois avouer qu’une telle proposition si développée et bien pensée dans le mouvement fait plaisir à voir sur la scène québécoise d’aujourd’hui.

En prenant à bras le corps ce sacré morceau chorégraphique, Isabelle Poirier et Lucie Vigneault sont époustouflantes l’une comme l’autre dans la reprise et l’interprétation de l’œuvre originelle. Désarmantes, elles se livrent sans répit durant l’heure entière de performance, méritant amplement leur place dans le Panthéon Louise Bédard.

Sous l’apparence d’une danse très formelle qui oppose tension et relâchement, la chorégraphie de Bédard se montre très sensible. Même si le style de la musique et des costumes ancrent le spectacle dans les années 1990, Cartes postales de Chimère possède une force qui a traversé le temps et qui bouleverse encore autant le spectateur que lors de sa création.
