PROMESSES
Inspired by painting, writing, and sculpture, three duos create worlds that are both physical and abstract.
With Promesses, Louise Bédard casts her choreographer’s sensitive gaze on the world of visual arts, sculpting space and creating encounters between bodies and materials with fabric, miniature objects or word collages. She sculpts the duos, revealing the six dancers’ intimacy, plays with various interpretive textures, dares to digress to confront the ephemeral with the real passage of time. A space of shared solitudes emerges, magnifying both dance and the minimal gesture.
This ensemble piece marks the 30th anniversary of her company, Louise Bédard Danse, pursuing the aesthetic and human quest that began with La Démarquise. With each new work, Louise Bédard invites other art forms to become an integral part of the creative process. Here, a romantic tableau by Caspar David Friedrich inspires a certain ambiguity in the bodies of dancers Alejandro De Leon and Louis-Elyan Martin. Capturing the energy of young dancers Sébastien Provencher and Marilyn Daoust, she challenges them by working on the minimalism and immobility of the bodies as much as their virtuosity. Collages of words, taken from an original text by author Guylaine Massoutre, weave their way into impromptu songs performed by dancers Marie Claire Forté and Nicolas Patry.
Each duo represents a work in itself, evoking a myriad of possible relationships, far beyond the figure of the couple. Group partitionsinvite themselves between each of these duos, as echoes and counterpoints to the whole piece.
