ABOUT THIS ARTISTS

Gwenaël Bélanger
Art piece : Hors champ no.1
Attentive observation and a critical view of daily images is the starting point of all of Bélanger's projects. His creative process, characterized by a « do-it-yourself » approach, consists in playing with the boundaries of our perception of reality and its grayer areas. Through graphic and photographic processes, he exploits the interaction between what we see, what we imagine, and what we remember. He uses all kinds of visual strategies aiming to create shifts in perception and new visual schemes. They are premises of a creative space, a building site where constructions, manipulations, and transformations of language and media codes occur. Bélanger questions the status of the image, from its production to its transmission and reception, in order to test what we are able to perceive. His work has been presented at the Centre d'exposition Expression (Sainte-Hyacinthe), at the Musée régional de Rimouski, at the Centre Sagamie (Alma), and is represented by Galerie Graff.

Mario Côté
Art piece : Cluster no 2 : do 1_sol 20
Mario Côté has produced an impressive number of pieces from 1993 to 2000, initially as an exploration of schematic representations of electronic images before focusing on the renown experimental cinema figure Dziga Vertov. In recent years, his work has been dedicated to the visual translation of sounds from urban locations. His pictorial translations are inspired by musical compositions by the  American composer Morton Feldman and the Russian composer Galina Oustvolkaïa. As a painter, he questions traditional musical notation and its structuring of time, inscribing it instead into a visual space through geometric and non-figurative signs. His work has been shown as a retrospective exhibition in Tableau (2002) at the Musée d'art de Joliette (Québec) with independent commissioner Nicole Gingras, and at the Musée régional de Rimouski, in Table d’écoute (2015), with commissioner Patrice Loubier. Côté has also directed documentaries on dance and the work of visual artists. He is represented by Galerie Trois Points.

Manon De Pauw
Art piece : Concordance
Manon De Pauw’s creative process takes on multiple forms such as video, installation, performance, and photography. Her work features visual intrigues that unfold right in front of the spectator. Her research is focused on the manipulation of tangible and luminous material, as well as the process of appearance of images. Her projects are born out of a desire to create complex visual situations with the help of only a few elements. She constantly experiments with the processes of image creation and its means of display. A true formalist, Manon de Pauw believes in the evocative power of abstraction. She opts for questioning mediums and diverting them through experimental techniques for accidents and surprises to take place. Her work has been presented at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Théâtre La Chapelle, the Centro Nacional de las artes in Mexico City, the Festival des films sur l’art, and at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. She is represented by Galerie Division (Montreal).

François Lacasse
Art piece : Fonte
Akin both to objects and images, François Lacasse’s paintings develop according to a transformation process taking place directly on the canvas. Characterized by an investment in color, its materiality and its application process, Lacasse’s recent work hints at the history of abstract painting, especially its development in America in the fifties. He mainly uses an enumerative approach, creating a complex tension between subjectivity and desire. His work has been shown at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée d’art de Joliette, and at the Musée des beaux-arts de Québec. He is currently represented by Galerie René Blouin (Montreal).
